Pago de Carraovejas Tinto 2021

Pago de Carraovejas Tinto 2021

92 Points - Tim Atkin MW. When a producer’s ‘entry-level’ wine scores 92/100 from leading Spanish wine critic Tim Atkin MW and 93+ from Robert Parker, you know it’s something special. But then everything about Pago de Carraovejas Tinto 2021 is special. From its exceptionally well-sited high-altitude vines to its meticulous hand production, and the input from Pingus’s and Vega Sicilia's winemakers it’s a remarkable wine, one that every lover of fine Spanish red wine needs to try. Produced from a blend of Tinto Fino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot grapes from the wonderful 2021 vintage, this classic is already drinking beautifully but has time on its side.

Taste

The Pago de Carraovejas 2021 has a brooding, inky blue-black robe from which rise notes of cherries, plums, black figs, balsamic, cocoa and dusty minerals. On the palate, its profoundly complex, weighty, and impressive. Juicy red and black berries are joined by plums, black cherries, and pomegranate, with rich tones of coffee, bitter chocolate, herbs and spices coming in on the finish. The ample tannins are polished and rounded and will support long ageing, if you can resist the temptation to enjoy this stunning wine young, that is.

About the Producer

Bodegas Pago de Carraovejas was founded in 1987 by José María Ruiz with a view to producing wine that was good enough to pair with his restaurant’s suckling pig.  He chose a hillside site at Carraovejas, in Peñafiel in the then largely unknown Ribera del Duero. The site was a real find. With soils comprising of alternating layers of sandy silt and clay, with limestone, marl, and chalk, it was free-draining, mineral poor and at 850m above sea level, cool and able to offer the vines a long growing season.  They were the first to plant Cabernet Sauvignon in the region and they now have plantings of Merlot too.  In support of their belief in sustainable winemaking, vines are farmed organically and much of the vineyard work is done by hand.  They now produce three wines: the Pago de Carraovejas, El Anejón and Cuesta de las Liebres. All are classics, but the Cuesta de Las Liebres is one of Ribera del Duero’s superstar wines.
