Tinazzi Ca' de' Rocchi Amarone della Valpolicella La Bastia 2019

Tinazzi Ca' de' Rocchi Amarone della Valpolicella La Bastia 2019

98 Points - Luca Maroni. The Tinazzi Ca' de' Rocchi ‘The Bastia’ 2019 is a shining example of the brilliance of the 2019 Veneto’ vintage. Crafted from a blend of 90% Corvina and Corvinone grapes with Rondinella adding support, this is a magnificent Amarone. Produced on cooler vineyards laying between 150-300 meters above sea level, once harvested in September, the grapes were left in Tinazzi’s larder to dry until December. The small amount of super-concentrated juice that remained was gently drawn out and fermented at a relatively cool 20-24°C for 20 days. Once ready, the wines were transferred to large (20-40 hectolitre) oak casks for between 12 and 18 months. Old oak was favoured as the team didn’t want to mask the wines’ beauty with a layer of vanilla, but to soften it and add complexity through oxidation. The result is a stunning wine that has been awarded 98/100 by leading Italian wine critic, Luca Maroni.

Wine Press Ratings

98 Points - Luca Maroni

Taste

While some great Amarone wines can be too much of a good thing when young, being too rich, alcoholic, and lacking finesse, the Tinazzi Ca' de' Rocchi ‘The Bastia’ 2019 is already well-balanced and drinking beautifully. From its attractive mid-red garnet body rise intoxicating aromas of fresh and dried red berries, cherries, prunes, bitter chocolate and sweet, old balsamic. On the palate, it combines richness with freshness and delicacy with power. A soft surge of red and black cherries, plums and strawberries is followed by weightier notes of black figs, caramel, mocha, and cherry liqueur before a dry, tangy finish comes in at the end. Excellent now with charcuterie, rich, hearty pasta or roasted red meats, it will age and mellow over the next decade or more.

Blend: 90% Corvina and Corvinone, 10% Rondinella

About the Producer

Since its founding in 1968, Tinazzi has earned an enviable reputation for the excellence of its Italian wines. Today the family has vines in Veneto, Puglia and Tuscany which are dedicated to producing authentic wines that reflect their vineyards’ terroir and the natural beauty of grapes that are planted there. Innovators by nature, the Tinazzi family are always willing to experiment in the pursuit of perfection and now produce an organic Merlot in Tuscany and through pioneering winemaking a genuinely fine Pinot Grigio. Committed to sustainability, in 2021 they launched a range of organic wines made with eco-friendly packaging. The Tinazzi family see organic wine production as the future of wine and will eventually convert all their vines to organic viticulture so that the next generation can enjoy their exceptional wines too.
