Senorio de San Vicente San Vicente Rioja 2020
Senorio de San Vicente San Vicente Rioja 2020
95 Points - Tim Atkin MW. San Vincente 2020 is a singular Rioja in several ways. It’s produced from a single, rare grape, the excellent Tempranillo Peludo which are grown in a single vineyard, and it enjoys an Atlantic climate with some continental influences on calcareous-clay soils. This unique combination allows for the creation of a singularly fine red Rioja. Organically farmed, nothing is left to chance here. Grapes are hand-harvested according to strict rules regarding the health and ripeness of the grapes. Once they arrive at the winery they are not sorted once, but twice with anything deemed less than perfect being put aside. To ensure maximum extraction, the juice is pumped over the skins twice a day during fermentation and once ready, the wine is aged in new French (90%) and American (10%) oak barrels. After this long barrel ageing, the San Vincente Rioja rests for a further year in bottle before release. The San Vincente 2020 is a pearl of a wine, even by their standards, and was awarded 93+ points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Parker has described their wines as, ‘Rioja made in the image of a Chateau Margaux, where richness is combined with elegance’. Wow.

Taste
San Vicente was aged 20 months in primarily new French oak (a small amount of American wood was also used) and bottled unfiltered. This Pomerol-styled Spanish red offers succulent, mocha, black cherry, chocolate, and toasty oak aromas as well as wonderful intensity, medium to full body, silky tannin, and a long, heady finish.’ The Wine Advocate, 93+ Luis Gutiérrez
About the Producer
San Vincente is owned by Sierra Cantabria, a leading Spanish wine producer founded by the Eguren family in 1870. It owns several impressive wineries across Spain, but the Sierra Cantabria winery is in the heart of San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta. They craft a range of classic Riojas wines from 19 vineyard sites totalling over 160 acres, including the La Canoca vineyard from which San Vicente hails, which is planted with the near-extinct Tempranillo Peludo. Innovation meets tradition here, with an obsessive drive for quality fuelling experimentation and change.
