94 Points - Tim Atkin MW. The Cuentaviñas Alomado 2021 is another wonderful wine from of this extraordinary Rioja bodega. Produced from a single vineyard which is home to vines that are over 60 years old, it marries tradition with innovation to startling effect. It’s planted with a mixture of Tempranillo grapes alongside the white varieties of Viura, Malvasía Riojana and Calagraño in what’s now known as a ‘field blend’. Innovation continues in the winery where the wine is barrel fermented in small oak casks with a blend of wild yeasts, those present on the grapes’ skins, and cultivated yeasts. It is then aged for 18 months not in the more common 225 litre casks, but 500 barrels which reduces the oakiness and allows the wine’s glorious freshness and nuance to be preserved. The result is an intriguing mix of power and complexity, depth and freshness. Add in the brilliance of the 2021 Rioja vintage, and this is a wine that every Rioja lover should have in their collection.

Taste
The 2021 Alomado is 80% Tempranillo, 10% Viura, 6% Malvasía and 4% Calagraño sourced from San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Rioja Alavesa. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (one-third new), this wine boasts a purple hue and delicate aromas of strawberry, sour cherry, balsamic and dried flowers, with hints of fresh rose. On the palate, it is dry, lean and silky with an energetic flow that lingers long, revealing profound, complex, lasting flavours. This represents a novel approach to Rioja reds, shaping new frames for the region, particularly in the Sonsierra area. 93/100 Robert Parker
About the Producer
Cuentaviñas is the new project of Eduardo Eguren, a fifth-generation member of the Eguren family, who are owners of some of the greatest wineries in Spain. Having long dreamt of producing a Rioja which put the grapes’ character at the fore, after inheriting three prime vineyards from his grandfather he made his dream a reality. Eduardo wanted his wines to tell a story. The name Cuentaviñas is a play on words, cuentacuentos meaning storyteller, so cuentaviñas translates to vineyard-teller. Production is minuscule, allowing for practices such as ploughing by horse, hand-pruning and canopy management, much of which Eduardo does himself. Cuentaviñas is an excellent example of the ‘new Spain’. Its practices blend the best of Rioja with the best of Burgundy and the Rhône, and what a story these wines tell!

The TastingBOX is delivered free of charge by UK Royal Mail Tracked 48hr to UK addresses only.
As indicated in our Quality Promise we will happily refund or exchange any faulty bottles. All we ask is the bottles in question are returned to us at least half full for verification purposes. If a bottle is broken on delivery we will also replace or refund it but we do require photographic evidence of the breakage. Equally we can arrange for the bottles to be collected the next time you receive a delivery from us.
Should we be unable to fulfil any part, or all of an order, Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) will suggest comparable substitutions. You are free to refuse these suggestions and are eligible for a full refund of relevant parts of the order.
In all instances, Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) must be informed of any claim within 24 hours of receipt of delivery by email or telephone. All refunds will be issued after we have received and approved the faulty items and the amount will be re-credited to your account within 30 days. The amount refunded will be equal to the full amount paid for the relevant products at the time of purchase and must be made by the same payment method as the original sale.
If you choose to cancel your contract of sale with Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) you may do so within 30 days of receipt of the goods. If the goods have already been dispatched they must be returned to us unopened and undamaged, and Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) will not be liable for any costs associated with the original or return delivery.
No refund can be given when a case has left bond as the value will be affected. Individual bottles of Fine Wine will be considered for refund on a case-by-case basis.
