Tapanappa Tiers Vineyard Chardonnay 2018
Tapanappa Tiers Vineyard Chardonnay 2018
95 points - Decanter World Wine Awards. The Tapanappa Tiers 2018 Chardonnay is a wonderful example of the new wave of cool-climate Australian wines. Produced in the Tiers vineyard in the south of the Piccadilly Valley, a sub-region of Adelaide Hills, it’s made from old vines that enjoy a long, slow ripening period on poor, rain-leached sandy loam soils. Once ripe the grapes were harvested by hand and chilled to 2oC before pressing to preserve the aromas and freshness. Using innovative air-bag presses, the juice was fermented in small French oak casks, a third of which were new. Fermentation took place in the cool autumn conditions, taking a full two months to complete. It was then barrel-aged on its lees (dead yeast and other natural by-products) before bottling. The resulting wine perfectly reflects its cool-climate vineyard being a sublimely elegant, yet full-flavoured Australian Chardonnay which time has softened and mellowed.

95 points - Decanter World Wine Awards (2018)
"From the Tiers Vineyard’s oldest, highest vines planted in 1979 on thinner, rockier soils, rising to 450m. Classy oak (33% new) and focused acidity buff the fruit to a shine, propelling the exceptionally, long, focused palate. Terrific intensity of white nectarine, with fig, oatmeal, cashew, cedar and vanilla nuances. Apple, bay leaf, flint and matcha tea hints emerge with time in the glass. Polished and precise, with not a hair out of place."
Taste
Bottle age has seen the once pale green-gold Tapanappa Tiers 2018 Chardonnay’s colour deepen to something closer to amber. Remarkably the bouquet remains fresh, zesty and youthful, with only the touches of honey and woodsmoke revealing its age. The palate is equally exuberant, with tangy citrus – grapefruit and baked lemon – now joined by kiwi, red apple, peach and mango. On the mid-palate and toward the finish, mellow notes of vanilla, lavender honey, and creamy minerals add a lovely warming weight. Perfect on its own, its freshness and fruitiness make it an ideal partner for creamy cheeses, white meats and roasted fish.
