El Enemigo Semillon 2021

El Enemigo Semillon 2021

94 Points - Descorchados. The El Enemigo Semillon is a rare find, a great Argentinean Semillon. Plantings of Semillon in Argentina have plunged over the last half century, with just 578 hectares of the once 5,500 hectares remaining in production. The innovative and quality-obsessed team at El Enemigo have seen the potential of this noble variety and have plantings in their high-altitude, 70-year-old vineyard in Agrelo in the Mendoza sub-region of Lujan de Cuyo that are producing exceptional wines such as this. Fermented using only native yeasts, the wine enjoys 15 months rest in French oak casks before release and emerges as a weighty, rounded, plump wine that drinks well young while being capable of many years of ageing.

Wine Press Ratings

94 Points - Descorchados (2021 Vintage)

"From a vineyard in the Agrelo zone of the Luján de Cuyo DOC and about 930 meters above sea level, at the beginning of the Andean foothills, 20% of this semillon was aged under a veil of flor (like the yellow wines from Jura) that winemaker Alejandro Vigil usually uses to give his whites a touch of complexity, that saline side of the flor. It's intense and honeyed, ample, juicy, and rich in ripe-fruit flavors with that touch of saline from the flor that appears toward the end of the palate."

93 Points - Tim Atkin MW (2021 Vintage)

Taste

Mid-gold with a lovely nose of peaches and pears, apples and honey, citrus and spice, there’s more than a passing resemblance to a fine dry white Graves to the El Enemigo Semillon. The palate is ripe and well-fruited, with baked apples, peaches, pears, guava and apricot leant freshness and zest by the lemony acidity before a seam of dry minerals and buttery vanilla come in on the finish. A great match for roasted chicken, creamy pasta dishes, mature cheeses, or pan-fried salmon or white fish, it’s such a shame production is so small.

About the Producer

An Oxford-educated historian and a leading agricultural engineer may not sound like the most obvious partners in wine production, but then El Enemigo is no ordinary wine producer. Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena of Catena Zapata fame came together in 2009 to create a winery that would represent the true culture, tradition and history of Argentina. They set out to challenge themselves to overcome the ‘original enemy’ (El Enemigo means the enemy) and to create something unique. Their wines have gone on to receive high scores from all the leading critics including a perfect 100 points from Robert Parker. Impressive, uncompromising and utterly delicious, the El Enemigo wines are unmissable.
