El Enemigo Malbec 2020
El Enemigo Malbec 2020
92 Points - Tim Atkin MW. The El Enemigo Malbec 2020 is the product of one of Mendoza’s finest estates in a superb vintage. Crafted from Malbec with a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot adding further colour, it’s shaping up to be a classic Argentinean Malbec. Quite reserved – it contains a relatively modest 13.5% alcohol – it’s a wine with a real taste of place, with dusty minerals reinforcing its structure. Given 92/100 from both James Suckling and Robert Parker, this limited release wine (under 3,000 cases were produced) is another fantastic wine from this groundbreaking winery.

"The effects of the warm year are felt in this malbec with sweet fruits and gentle, soft tannins. The fresh acidity does its job of balancing that succulent ripeness in a red to uncork now with charcuterie. This comes from vineyards about 1,400 meters up, planted in the second half of the 1990s on sandy and calcareous soils."
Blend: 90% Malbec, 8% Cabernet Franc + 2% Petit Verdot
Taste
With its saturated purple-red colour and multifaceted bouquet of black berries, prunes, black cherries, raspberries and savoury minerals, El Enemigo Malbec 2020 makes a great first impression. The palate is rich, weighty and intense, but has a level of refinement – almost austereness – that is uncommon in Argentinean Malbec. Offering a range of black fruits and red berries with creamy and savoury tones adding texture and interest, this gorgeous wine was made to go with roasted red meats, strong white cheeses, sundried tomatoes or just good company.
About the Producer
An Oxford-educated historian and a leading agricultural engineer may not sound like the most obvious partners in wine production, but then El Enemigo is no ordinary wine producer. Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena of Catena Zapata fame came together in 2009 to create a winery that would represent the true culture, tradition and history of Argentina. They set out to challenge themselves to overcome the ‘original enemy’ (El Enemigo means the enemy) and to create something unique. Their wines have gone on to receive high scores from all the leading critics including a perfect 100 points from Robert Parker. Impressive, uncompromising and utterly delicious, the El Enemigo wines are unmissable.
