The Valdivieso Caballo Loco Grand Cru Limari is another of Valdivieso’s flagship wines, one that utilises fruit from their best plantings of Syrah, Carmenere, Malbec, and Pinot Noir grapes. While Limari is one of the finest of Chile’s wine regions, it’s also one of the most inhospitable. Annual rainfall of around 90mm (3.5 inches) combined with poor clay and chalk soils mean that vines struggle and the resulting fruit can be superb. A blend of Syrah, Carmenere, Malbec and Pinot Noir may not sound like the most obvious recipe for wine success, but each brings something to it that makes it far more than the sum of its parts. Powerful but refined, spicy but juicy, approachable but age-worthy, it’s a bold, fascinating wine that will excite the palate of every red wine lover.

"A version that’s very similar to the syrahs obtained in northern Chile, especially from the alluvial terraces of the Limarí River. This comes from a vineyard with stony soils rich in calcium carbonate, some 20 kilometers from the Pacific, and it's generous in aromas of ripe black fruit and notes of black olives, a typical feature of its origin. The body is succulent and marked by friendly tannins and refreshing acidity. A special red to accompany lamb."
Taste
As you might expect from a cool-climate wine made from Syrah, Carmenere, Malbec and Pinot Noir, there’s an awful lot going on in the Caballo Loco Grand Cru Limarí 2020. The nose is distinctly Limari, being fragrant and lifted, with plenty of red berries, blueberries, black pepper and spicy vanilla. In the mouth, there’s complexity but also precision. Each of the grape’s signatures is on show – strawberries, plums, and pepper from the Syrah, smoke and herbs from the Carmenere, juicy black berries, blueberries and chocolate from the Malbec, and red cherries and raspberries from the Pinot – but all are perfectly balanced. The finish is fresh, taut and mineral-laden, with an earthy tang and firm tannins that suggest a long life ahead. Savour this with hearty meat dishes, roasted vegetables such as squash with whole garlic bowls or strong cheeses.
About the Producer
Valdivieso is one of Chile’s oldest wineries with a history dating back to 1879 when Don Alberto Valdivieso founded Champagne Valdivieso S.A., the first sparkling wine house in South America. It was only in the early 1980s, however, that they turned their expertise to still wines and it now ranks amongst Chile’s finest and most-awarded wine producers. The combination of exceptional vineyards, a talented winemaking team headed by New Zealander, Bett Jackson, and an unflinching commitment to quality has made Valdivieso a producer whose wines are well worth seeking out.

The TastingBOX is delivered free of charge by UK Royal Mail Tracked 48hr to UK addresses only.
As indicated in our Quality Promise we will happily refund or exchange any faulty bottles. All we ask is the bottles in question are returned to us at least half full for verification purposes. If a bottle is broken on delivery we will also replace or refund it but we do require photographic evidence of the breakage. Equally we can arrange for the bottles to be collected the next time you receive a delivery from us.
Should we be unable to fulfil any part, or all of an order, Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) will suggest comparable substitutions. You are free to refuse these suggestions and are eligible for a full refund of relevant parts of the order.
In all instances, Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) must be informed of any claim within 24 hours of receipt of delivery by email or telephone. All refunds will be issued after we have received and approved the faulty items and the amount will be re-credited to your account within 30 days. The amount refunded will be equal to the full amount paid for the relevant products at the time of purchase and must be made by the same payment method as the original sale.
If you choose to cancel your contract of sale with Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) you may do so within 30 days of receipt of the goods. If the goods have already been dispatched they must be returned to us unopened and undamaged, and Perfect Cellar (Beyond the Bottle Ltd) will not be liable for any costs associated with the original or return delivery.
No refund can be given when a case has left bond as the value will be affected. Individual bottles of Fine Wine will be considered for refund on a case-by-case basis.
